REMS Awarded Grant

On January 13, 2011 REMS received notification from Congressman Paul Tonko’s office that it was the recipient of a grant through FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program.  That notification was followed by the award announcement on FEMA’s AFG website (www.firegrantsupport.com) on January 14.  REMS has been awarded $118,215.00 to purchase 2 new ambulances, which is the full amount requested less the 10% cost share required for such a grant.  Currently, we are fortunate enough to be one of only forty-seven agencies to be awarded a grant under this program in New York State.

The grant comes at a time when we have been dealing with increased maintenance costs associated with vehicles that have very high mileage.  As described in the grant application, the 2 new ambulances will replace ambulances with the highest maintenance costs.  The new ambulances, when received, will immediately reduce maintenance and repair costs, reduce fuel costs and consumption due to their better miles per gallon rating and dramatically increase the vehicles in service time.

When put in service, a new ambulance will be posted in each of our stations.

In mid-December 2010, we received notification that another grant application under this same program had been declined.  The purpose of that grant submission was to upgrade stations with vehicle exhaust evacuation systems, personal protective equipment for staff, and the purchase of 4 new motorized stretchers.

We plan on continuing submissions for various grants and funding through various charitable foundations in the future.

Mutual Aid - What is it and how does it work?

I've called for an ambulance, and when it arrived, it wasn't my regular service provider.  Why is that?  There are times when the EMS system has requests for service that outnumber the amount of resources that are available at that time.  In situations like this, EMS services rely on outside agencies to assist covering these calls to ensure the requests for services are met in a timely fashion.  Rotterdam EMS is no different.
